Technical Description

A CLASSAX system consists of three main components: The first one is given by the set of sensors used to pick up the physical quantities which allow the information of interest to be derived from (see "Sensor Setup").

Since sensors alone do not yet make up a measuring device there must be an electronic unit installed more or less close to the sensors which is able to transform the sensor signals into a stream of information suitable to be transmitted over considerable distances. In the case of a CLASSAX system this unit does all processing steps neccessary to provide vehicle-related data and perform classification (see "Road Unit").

The third main component is located at the place where the information delivered by CLASSAX is required. It must not be understood as a physical computer but rather as a software system which allows to perform all the tasks necessary to set up, operate and query the CLASSAX installation. A physical computer can thus service a multitude of CLASSAX sites as well as do a variety of additional jobs (see "Host Computer").
