Host ComputerThe connection between the road unit and the host computer can be established directly via the MD-440's RS-232 interface. This will be the best choice if the host computer is located close to the AVC site or if teach-in or other non-operative tasks are performed on-site. The possibilities are, however, far from being limited to this option since there is various equipment for conversion from RS-232 to other data links availble. Especially conversion to Ethernet offers a large variety of opportunities for system design.

Interaction with the CLASSAX hardware is not restricted to some specific platform because all data are in plain text format, most of the output data are even human-readable. Furthermore there is no specific timing to be obeyed, so the data may be buffered or delayed as ever appropriate.
CLASSAX has two main operating modes. First is of course operation as a vehicle classificator. But before this can take place CLASSAX must be supplied with information about according to what characteristics it must put vehicles into what classes. This is accomplished by an initial teach-in process.
